About Darren Huppert

The Accidental Entrepreneur
I didn’t plan to start a consultancy. A Placer County Supervisor did it for me.
While I was handling digital communications for Placer County, one of the county’s elected supervisors approached me personally and asked if I’d help with his reelection campaign in my off time. I built his website and contributed to his social media strategy alongside another consultant. He won.
That experience planted a seed. If an elected official trusted me enough to bring me in on his campaign, maybe there were other organizations out there who needed exactly what I had to offer — someone who understood government and public agencies from the inside, knew how to communicate with communities, and could do the creative work to back it up.
In 2018, Huppert Marketing & PR was born.
A Career Built in Public Service
I’ve spent more than 25 years at the intersection of communications, technology, and community — most of it serving public agencies and organizations that make a real difference in people’s lives.
My career began in the private sector at Microsoft, where I spent over a decade during some of the most transformative years in tech. But public service called me back to my roots. I went on to Northern California Power Agency, Placer County, and SMUD — one of California’s largest publicly owned utilities — managing social media programs reaching 100,000+ followers, leading crisis communications inside an Emergency Operations Center, and earning a 2019 CAPIO Award for Internal Communications along the way.
One of my proudest moments was partnering with a colleague on a COVID-19 community campaign for Placer County that Adobe recognized as a best-in-class example of digital communications. That campaign reached people when they needed information most — and that’s exactly the kind of work I’m here to do.
Why I Do This Work
I’m a Gold Country native. I grew up here, built my career here, and put down roots here. When I help a government agency communicate a service change clearly, or help a nonprofit reach the community members who need their services most, or help a public utility manage a crisis with transparency and calm — that’s not abstract work to me. These are my neighbors. This is my community.
I genuinely believe that good communication makes government and public institutions work better. When agencies communicate clearly and honestly, communities trust them more. When utilities get their message right during an emergency, people stay safer. That’s why this work matters to me beyond the professional satisfaction of doing it well.
What Makes Me Different
I bring something most consultants and agencies can’t: firsthand experience inside the organizations I serve. I’ve sat in the Emergency Operations Center. I’ve navigated government procurement and public agency culture. I’ve managed communications programs under elected officials and executive leadership. I know how public agencies work, what their constraints are, and how to get things done within them.
When you work with Huppert Marketing & PR, you work directly with me — a senior-level communications professional with 25+ years of experience, not a junior account team. And when a project calls for additional expertise, I bring in a trusted network of specialized professionals to scale seamlessly. You get the responsiveness and personal attention of a boutique consultancy with the capability to handle complex, high-stakes programs.
